Danish furniture artistry has its classics. Kaare Klint, Hans Wegner, Arne Jacobsen and Paul Kjærholm – like four kings in a deck of cards. When they first arrived in the arena, they were experimental. These days, they are numbered among the classics.

You can ask yourself, when you look at furniture designed by Mathias Bengtsson, who is born in Copenhagen despite his Swedish-sounding name, how it will be perceived in fifty years’ time? Will his experimental artistry be regarded as being classic? Or will he forever remain an outsider fleeing from tradition?

The most fascinating aspect of Mathias Bengtsson’s design is his mixture of the latest computerised technology combined with exquisite craftsmanship. He maintains Denmark’s modern design inheritance, but at the same time he walks by himself.

Mathias Bengtsson experiments with form, manufacture and material. He constructs his furniture from carbon fibre or by laser-cut layers of plywood, acrylic sheet or aluminium.

During the Design Year, the Röhsska Museum will of course focus on Swedish industrial design and Swedish craftsmanship. But it is also felt to be important that the museum maintains an international perspective during the year. For this reason, the Röhsska Museum is very pleased to be able to feature an internationally renowned designer and focus on his production. By this means, a wider public can be made aware of Mathias Bengtsson’s brilliant and innovative design and technical production.
